Ask an Expert is an ideal opportunity to bring along your plans and discuss them with a range of consultants and specialists. Although no booking is required for these one-to-ones, you may have to wait to speak to your chosen expert.

Seek expertise in the following specialist areas at the Show:


    Neil Davey of NSBRC

    With many years of experience, Neil Davey, Technical Helpdesk Consultant at the NSBRC, has helped hundreds of self builders progress and complete their projects through the impartial advice and support he offers. As a resident expert at the NSBRC, Neil’s area of expertise covers the design and planning process, as well as signposting and offering general self build advice.


    Managing Director of ClearPlan Project Management, James Bryden, has over 25 years’ experience in construction within the commercial and private sector. He has worked on luxury residential developments, listed buildings, conservation areas and has a keen interest in sustainable building and micro-generation technologies and products. James’ career has spanned work in both the UK and international construction projects. James will be joined by ClearPlan’s Nicky Bryden in offering advice.


    Trevor Slocombe and Tom Ahern join the Ask an Expert area from Jhai - an Approved Inspector, licensed every five years by the government - via the Construction Industry Council (CIC) - to carry out Building Regulations approvals (Building Control) as an alternative to Local Authorities. Jhai have processed over 65,000 Building Control applications in the last five years. Bring your plans and speak to Trevor and Tom about the best method to getting your plans approved and SAP ratings.


    Christopher Whitehouse is the Managing Director of Chartered Planning & Development Surveying Consultancy, Next Phase Development. His fast growing, fresh thinking and award winning professional consultancy offers a one stop planning and design service with expert support and management to help secure planning permissions for major development schemes through to individually tailored residential projects.

    Christopher has been recognised by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors; Winning Young Surveyor of the Year in the category of Planning and Development in 2014. He is also one of the youngest people in the UK to become an RICS Accredited Expert Witness.


    Eddie Acford of Point 6 Projects has been building ultra-low energy homes and in particular building to the Passivhaus standard for seven years. He has an in depth knowledge in the practical and technical side of building to the Passivhaus standard.


    Kamran Khan of Green Form Design

    Kamran Khan is the principal of Green Form Design, with over 30 years’ experience. GFD is devoted to high quality residential design, from small extensions to one off bespoke homes where attention to detail is of primary importance. The practice is currently engaged in a broad range of activities, including high quality domestic extensions and one-off ecological house design projects.

    Terry Pinto of Pinto Associates Architecture & Design (PAAD)

    Terry is a chartered architect with over two decades of experience having worked in large practices to small conservation architects on a number of high profile schemes across the country prior to setting up PAAD in October 2010. His passion is a belief in sustainable, ethical design that is accessible to all and to provide buildings that are right for their location and owners whilst enhancing the environment.
